Why Spray Foam Is in a Class of Its Own
Of all the insulation products available to El Segundo homeowners, spray polyurethane foam stands apart for one simple reason: it insulates and air seals in a single application. Fiberglass batts and blown-in cellulose are excellent at slowing heat transfer, but they do nothing to stop air movement through the cavities they occupy. Spray foam expands on contact to fill every void, crack, and irregular gap, forming a rigid seal that simultaneously provides thermal resistance and blocks uncontrolled air exchange.
The challenge for homeowners is that spray foam isn't a single product—it comes in two fundamentally different formulations, open-cell and closed-cell, and each has a distinct set of properties, performance characteristics, and ideal applications. Using the wrong type in the wrong location can mean paying for performance you don't need or, worse, falling short of what a specific area actually requires.

Closed-Cell Spray Foam: Maximum Performance Where Moisture Is a Concern
Closed-cell spray foam (ccSPF) is the denser of the two formulations, curing to a rigid, almost plastic-like consistency. Its defining characteristics are a high R-value per inch—approximately R-6 to R-7—and its ability to act as both an air barrier and a Class II vapor retarder. That vapor-retarding quality is what makes closed-cell foam the right choice anywhere moisture management is critical.
In El Segundo's coastal environment, that covers a lot of ground. The marine layer that settles over the South Bay regularly drives ground-level and structural humidity higher than in inland climates. Closed-cell foam's impermeability prevents moisture from migrating into building assemblies where it can cause wood rot, mold growth, and insulation degradation over time. Ideal applications include:
- Crawl space foundation walls and rim joists — The first line of defense against ground moisture migrating into your home's structure.
- Roofline and cathedral ceiling assemblies — Where condensation risk is elevated and vapor control is required by California energy code.
- Exterior wall cavities in high-humidity zones — Particularly on ocean-facing walls that receive persistent marine-layer moisture.
- Below-grade and below-floor applications — Any surface in contact with or adjacent to soil or concrete.
The tradeoff with closed-cell foam is cost. Because the material is denser and uses more chemical per square foot of coverage, it carries a higher price per installed inch than open-cell foam. For applications where its vapor-retarding properties are genuinely needed, that premium is well justified. For interior applications where moisture isn't a factor, it can be unnecessary.
Open-Cell Spray Foam: Cost-Effective Performance for Interior Applications
Open-cell spray foam (ocSPF) cures to a soft, spongy consistency and provides approximately R-3.5 to R-3.7 per inch—meaningfully lower than closed-cell but still superior to fiberglass batt per inch of installed depth. Its open cellular structure allows water vapor to pass through, which means it should never be used in applications where moisture control is required. However, for the right applications, it delivers excellent thermal and acoustic performance at a lower installed cost.
Open-cell foam is particularly effective in:
- Interior wall cavities — Where sound dampening between rooms is a priority alongside thermal performance.
- Attic roof deck applications (unvented attic assemblies) — When applied at adequate thickness, open-cell foam on the underside of roof sheathing creates a conditioned attic space that keeps HVAC ducts within the thermal envelope.
- Interior partition walls — For improved acoustic separation in multi-story homes or homes near LAX flight paths in El Segundo.
Because open-cell foam expands more aggressively—up to 100 times its liquid volume—it's also efficient at filling large, irregular cavities completely, with no voids or compressions that can compromise performance.
A Whole-Home Approach: Combining Foam Types Strategically
Many El Segundo homes benefit from both foam types used in different locations. A comprehensive spray foam project might involve closed-cell foam in the crawl space and on rim joists for moisture control, open-cell foam on the interior of the roof deck to create a conditioned attic, and closed-cell foam on exterior-facing wall cavities with the highest moisture exposure. The result is a layered, strategically designed building envelope that addresses every thermal and moisture boundary with the most appropriate material.
